Default Gear BOX ISSUE!

Hello WRX Brethren,

I have some issues with the gear box! Sometimes, I find it hard to actually shift the gear in it's slot. It happens most frequently in the 1st, 2nd and Reverse. The feeling is like a 'blockage'? Especially when I gear down from 3 to 2 or turn on the car and move to 1 or Reverse. Does anyone know what the likelihood of this issue can be? The previous owner said to me that he had purchased and replaced the gear box, the brand is FUCHS? If the issue is not heard of or you wouldn't have a clue but know a good/trusty/honest workshop/person who could take a look at my gear box that would be great! Also what the estimated pricing for a gear box check would be.

Any suggestions/assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Jeremiah

Since you're driving a bug-eye, I'm going to assume the gearbox is similar to the peanuts as well, and if that's the case, then yes, our gearboxes have some difficulty getting into first or reverse. All you gotta do is just release the clutch a little bit and it'll slot in perfect. I don't have any issue with 2nd or third though. Might wanna get the gearbox and diff oil a check/change?

If you are worried take it to a workshop to get it checked now, rather than possibly wait until it is too late if something is wrong.

Suggest booking it in with S-Technic.

FUCHs is a brand of oil. So Im guessing thats what the previous owner was talking about.

You could try putting in some Redline light weight shockproof gear oil into the gearbox. It does wonders for synchro operation. Making it easier to change gears. Just make sure to drain the old oil out over the course of a day or so. Redline oil does NOT like mixing with other brands.

Also check the clutch hydraulics are clean and free of air in the lines.

Otherwise... if its fucked... I'll sort you out with a 6 speed conversion. You'll never look back :P

Hard to select gears, especially while shifting down, indicates worn synchroes.
Pretty normal for an old 5 speed, 2nd gear gets a hard time when shifting up under load.
1st gear gets a hard time from people slamming it in while slowing down.
Reverse is always harder to select then the other gears at it isn't constant mesh.

I personally don't think Redline shockproof is a good gear oil for Subaru transaxles in the long term.
I would try Castrol Syntrax, which is a fully synthetic version of the manufacturer recommended oil (Castrol Multitrax).
The only way to fix it properly is to strip the box and replace the worn parts

what this man said...or be like me and shove some redline oil in it. Be-warned it becomes a ticking time bomb mine lasted another 2 years on smurf blood before self-destructing. My box had all the symptoms you have went well till one day it went bang

Hrmmmm, apparently the guy that had it before me, changed the gear box 30k's ago. So i'm not sure if it's an old worn box, unless he's lying =[
does anyone know how to replace gear oil anyway? is it a simple process or somewhat complicated?
