Default Key question.

Hi all.
Hope someone can help. Was in at a lock smiths the other day and asked them how much for a new key. The guy took my key and headed out the back and put it into some machine to test it. Since then my lock and unlock buttons don't work. They were working when I arrived at the shop as I locked the car with it. The car is a 2004 wrx and still has the factory brant keypad and alarm system.(don't judge me for still having it.) has anyone else had this issue that could give me some advice before I go to Subaru and get asked to bend over.
Cheers
Anthony

It could be a loose or dead battery. Try opening up the key and see if the battery is inserted correctly. If it is, try replacing it and see if that works. I had a similar problem with my central locking not working and once I replaced the battery it was fine.

Do the lock/unlock buttons on the key line up with the sensors on the internal works? That's the only other thing I can think of to try.

If your key stopped working immediately after locksmith I would contact him and query. If it was sometime after probably coincidence.

Sometimes when you replace batteries in them you have to pair security codes with the vehicle. Not sure if Subarus are set up this way.

My old Magna was like this, check in your user manual for key battery replacement procedure.

Hi Anthony.
It seems like an unfortunate coincidence.
I am a workshop manager and locksmith at a locksmith company here in Perth.
Your key holds 2 different systems in the key head. 1 your central locking remote and 2ndly and most importantly a transponder chip which is what the locksmith would have been checking in his machine.
Reading the transponder would in no way effect your central locking remote.
Best of luck with the fix.
