I am running 10w40 on a 100k motor .. When should one look at thickening up the oil a tad .. What grade is a little thicker than 10w40?

i thought the first number specifies the "thickness" and the second is the temp so going 15w or 20w is thicker than 10w...unless im wrong??

The viscosity grade indicates thickness - (high # - thick / low# = thin)
The two numbers indicate the grading at different temps
eg 10W40 = 10 at startup / and 40 at operating temp

Hey,

I have a boost problem with my new motor, it came out of a 94 wagon.

My max boost is about 12psi, and sometimes when it reaches 12 it seems to get a fuel cut.

It seems the wategate solenoid seems to rapidly open and close when you start the motor and also when its on boost.

It doesnt come up with an error in the computer, I am using the JAP computer and AFM etc. I have measured the voltages and resistances in the wires and this appears to be fine with the manual. I have tried swapping the units around but it occurs on both solenoids.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be?

Thanks.

Hey Oldy,

Welcome to Perth WRX, it's good to see another UWAM member roaming about.

Sorry to hear about your engine problems, but I'm sure the guys on here will sort you out.

Have you checked for leaks? Have you gotten more than 12PSI boost since the new motor?

Take Care
Fred

Spot on Booga, also worth noting the oil starts off thin and thickens with heat. So my Castrol Edge 10W60 really provides some protection once warm. Generally if you have a motor that uses variable valve timing, (02 WRX onwards) then you need to stay with a thinner oil. These are options best discussed with a Mechanic that has been there and done that.

Welcome Stu, best to start your own thread if you haven't yet as that's a classic "thread jack". You will still find an answer, if not hop on over to Rexnet and they will sort you out.

The oil doesnt really thicken with heat, 10w60/40/30 means that the oil will be a 10w when cold, and it wont thin out more than a 60/50/40w oil would be when it is hot.

so it is like putting a cold straight saw10 into your engine when it is cold, and once it warms up putting a hot (100 deg) SAE50 into your engine
