Ahhh!!! I've done a big end :(
Hey Guys,
This is my first post on p-wrx. I have a 95 wrx wagon which I have had for about 5 months. I took it to whoop ass wednesday a few weeks ago to see what kind of time it could do and... yeah well i got through about 5 runs, after which it developed a nice little knocking noise in the engine. I've taken the engine out and the sump off and I found plenty of metal flakes in the bottom of the sump. The big end of cylinder no3 is nice and wobbly on the crank. I went to a place in Wangara who would sell me a front cut from Japan for $2700. I think this will be a more powerful engine than mine... (anyone know how much?) I dont know what year it is. He also had a twin turbo legacy long motor that he would give me for $1500. He said this was a popular swap for the single turbo block because the twin turbo block had higher compression. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm also considering pulling it apart and taking the crank to a shop to get machined to fit an oversized bearing. Obviously i will do all the bearings while i'm there and check cylinders/pistons etc. Opinions? Cheers Stu. |

I would not recommend getting the TT Long motor. The higher compression means, you'll need a retune. If you don't get a retune, it'll be pinging all over the place, and in no time, you'll probably kill it and be back where you started.
Call up a company over east called Ichiban. http://www.ichiban.com.au/ They will sell you a Complete early Gc8 motor for around $1200 to $1300 shipped to you in WA. Compression tested with a 6 month warranty. Otherwise a complete early GC8 front cut from them is around $2000+ shipping (Around $400) If you want to upgrade go for a V3 or V4 STI motor. (1997/1998) Swap over the intake manifold and bolt in. Only thing is, they are quite rare in Australia, and if you can find one, they are usually pretty expensive. Around $5K.

If you're capable of doing the work yourself which you seem to be I think the cheapest easiest option would be to re build it, get the heads looked at at the same time & you'll know exactly what you have instead of another unknown 2nd hand motor.

rebuild it with a 207! you sound like you know what going on so get the heads checked over to be sure and as i said 207. I think they are around the $3000 mark
sorry to hear

a new 207 shortblock goes for 3k it would be cheaper to do that they build ur one back to spec..
pistons 1000, rods, 600, machine work 500, gaskets etc etc.. itll end up costing u more and it will still be inferior than the 207 imo..
