Are you valuing the Forester at $2000 because it has a head gasket problem or is that what you value it at before the problem?

Reason I ask is that if it's only worth 2 grand as a going car it must be rough as guts otherwise. If that's the case, let it go.

If it's an otherwise good car it may be worth spending the dosh on, making it good again. $3500 would probably include some maintenance items as well, not purely the repair. I would expect the timing belt and idlers, maybe water pump, hoses and radiator all get attention. Oil and filter etc. So it's some money you would sooner of later spend whether the gasket blew or not.

as doug said, even decent condition 2000 na foz fetching 5-6k

can buy a secondhand engine from a wreckers for cheaper, but then you still have to pay for install if you cant do it yourself
