I've had a V6 STI swap done to mine mate, it's not all doom and gloom but you have to be prepared for the worst (same with buying a 2nd hand car really).

Couple of points:

1. Don't bother with a WRX swap. Get an STI swap or sell it and buy a WRX/STI. Yes, there are major improvements.

2.

Am I right in saying its a case of swapping ecu, engine and turbo, harness, crossmember, and exhaust?
Not quite. Engine, gearbox, diff, master cyl, proportioning valve, ABS system, cooling system, driveshafts, exhaust, wiring harness, ECU, heater boxes, front alloy control arms, front swaybar, crossmember... basically everything mechanical in the engine bay got swapped out when they did mine. They may have done some things unnecessarily but at the end of the day, if it all worked in the old car then it's probably better to transfer it all over to the new car.

3. You'll need a turbo bonnet and at least WRX 16's. Would very, VERY strongly recommend a set of decent tyres and WRX shocks or better.

4. Aircon will need to be regassed

5. Compression/leakdown test is a good idea, major service inc. t/belt regardless of kms is a good idea too

6. Buying a WRX gets you all the bodykit, the interior, easier insurance and a better resale value. Not so easy when you're building your own!

All comes down to what you want to do with the car too. If you're like most who change cars every few years, don't even think about it. If you're like me and really can't see yourself selling it any time soon, then it may be an option.

I like positive replies Patch. Gives me an excuse to keep going.

So basically half cut plus rear diff? Been told gear box does normally come with half cut?

Definitely a few extra things to think about so cheers.

And yes had the car for about 10 years so its probably something to keep me interested in it, and still like it.

Your not the first to comment re wrx upgrade and get sti, was just thinking for a daily and not going to put massive boost through prob didn't matter, but definitely a lot of people saying go STi. Must be something in it!

Going from non turbo to turbo, anything will be better. Hey also if turbo kicks in at say late 2000's, do you still get a heap of boost just daily driving and giving it a bit of stick?? Not going for tracking or anything insane but just a fun daily.

Oh also have 2006 17 inch so already done that one. Have King srpings but not convinced so might change them to, and look at coilovers or kyb and something. That can wait though as what I have is alright at moment.

Just got air cond regassed on this engine.

I feel that while a lot could be said, it's all been said before. Best of luck with whatever path you choose.

Sounds like you have a couple of parts you could swap onto an already running WRX.

Cheers Mitch. Still getting my head around it all so not going to keep the thread going on and on as it sounds like it gets asked a bit. Started the Sti fund today selling my body and got a whole bucket of lemons so all good so far.

Are you going to be doing all the work yourself and getting the parts at trade/well below retail?

If not it'll be cheaper to purchase a Lamborghini Aventador instead.
