Usually at the drivers briefing. Can't remember the exact details, but I think the driver has to pay up to the first x amount.

Pretty sure it'd be in the supp regs somewhere.

That's correct, up to $5000, I went to see dieter after the crash and the motorplex officials said that there wasn't much damage caused to the barrier, I was fully aware that u would have to pay for damages but didn't have to

At the end of the day, whether or not it needs to be there, nor the reason why its there is irrelevant - the fact is that it is there and you drive accordingly. Its no different to other concrete barriers or walls that need to be there. Its just unfortunate that Todd made a mistake there; thankfully it only hurt the hip pocket and the ego!
Surely the simple solution is to put 3 or 4 plastic bollards there (same as the ones used in the chicane) to stop people cutting the grass. Clip the bollards and you get a time penalty - simple, effective and much, much safer.

Why create a hazard that doesn't need to be there?

See no problem with the concrete barriers etc, not like there is a pallet of explosives to drive around, same situation for all crews, you must adjust your driving to suit, cannot remove all hazards.

Yes you can. Sure you cannot move any other of the fixed hazards at the venue but you can move this one.

I'm a bit perplexed at the resistance to trying to the make the venue safer for competitors.

Cars get scruitineered for safety, helmets get checked, fire extinguishers fitted, driver briefing, etc, yet critical areas of circuit safety seem to be brushed off with "drive to your limits" comments.

"Circuit safety" is very different to "Rally" events in my opinion, no argument that any hazards on a circuit course are removed or reduced, on a Rally event these hazards are there so you reduce speed and drive accordingly.
If you want a less hazardous motorsport environment go to Barbagallo.

Fred, Hopefully this doen't come out the wrong way, but you've never entered one of these events and you've been critical of the concrete. Remeber what the intent of this event is for. It is to get a taster for tarmac rally.

Sorry to say that tarmac rally bites if you get it wrong. You either drive accordingly, or at best you pay your preferred panel beater to straighten out the mess you made, at worst you end up eating hospital food!

Putting some challenges there to make people thing about the dangers I believe is very good. It makes people think about what can happen and the risk / reward equation.

My view has always been I'd prefer to finish last in a tarmac rally but challenge myself rather than drive around around a track as there's more of a challenge and I personally think it's more of a challenge (not taking anything away from the fellows that circuit race as I think racing bumper to bumpr is also a great but just not for me).

Ultimately you enter the event that suits you. You then drive it accordingly

Back to the subject of the event and having fun? I still left with a smile on my face and determination to get the car/new car running
