Very sad...and as always very sobering. Thanks for the report Brendon and well done yesterday. Also well done to Ben Searcy.

The first stage today was damp. There was cars spearing off everywhere and we took it what we thought was very easy. Was all over the road looking for grip. Ended up 7th. Thought we were on for a good day.... then the rest of the day was dry and we did not do quite so well.
We thought we drove consistently and were attacking the 7's a bit harder but the results did not really show it. However we have only done just over 25% of the rally so still plenty of time for things to change. The car feels great so we will see what happens. I spoke to the head medical guy today who gave me a few more details on the crash. A couple of things that I want to clear up from my last post. 1) Kim Illman was not the first car on the scene but his co-driver recognised the car as they drove past so that is why they stopped. Kim went above and beyond and organised a wreath etc. Full props to him. 2) I checked our notes and the call was big air. The whole accident seems to make a whole lot more sense now. It explains the skid marks and after the guy landed he was simply a passenger. Whether it would have made any difference or not I dont know but the co driver did have a hans device on and the driver did not. The co driver has a broken pelvis and something with his back but he is expected to make a full recovery and his injuries are not life threatening. I have heard conflicting reports on the roll cage and I have not personally seen it but my understanding is that the cage held together and it was indeed a proper weld in cage. The guy had a rallysafe in his car. For those that don't know it has a g meter in it. The medical guy seems to know a lot about speeds etc so maybe he had a camera too. Anyways there were two impacts. The first at 6g and a second at 13g. I asked why they did not put a tarp over the car for when we all drove by and he said they did not want to tell the co driver that the driver had passed until they got him out of the car. As soon as they got him out of the car they put a tarp over the car. Anyways the one thing it has raised (again) is what can be done to control speeds. Apparently up until 7 or 8 years ago the whole point of targa Tasmania was to get your plate. You get your plate by basically completing all the stages with no problems / penalties. It sounds very simple but is actually quite an achievement. Now it has just turned into an arms race with however has the biggest and best toy and the average speeds have gone up and up. How you go back to the old days I don't know. So tomorrow is the very famous stage into Strahan. We have two nights in Strahan and then finish on Sunday night into Hobart. Brendon

Well a HANS device is to stop hyper extension of the neck in impacts. Hyper extension is the main cause of death in vehicle accidents when the spinal cord is snapped at the base of the skull stopping everything from working.
As you said who knows if it may have made a difference or not but I sure as shit won't run without one.

The impacts are the scary points in that post.
6 & 13G respectively. The fact that ( as bad as this sounds) only one person died is amazing. From the pictures, the car is not even that anymore. I feel for the families involved, it's a horrible thing to occur and especially so early into the event. Safety equipment can only do so much when you hit immovable objects. The fact that the co driver escaped and will eventually make a full recovery is astounding.
