17's vs 18's
Hi all,
Im looking to buy some lightweight jap rims for my MY00. Problem is im not sure which size i should buy...either 17'' or 18''?? Could someone please explain the pros and cons of each size. Im thinking the 18's look amazing as they fill the guards nicely but not sure how they will feel once i get coilovers installed. I have read that the 17's are better for cornering and you have a larger selection of quality tyres to choose from. Appreciate all help. |

18's r bigger than 17's
bigger means heavier... do u intend to use ur car for track work? drags etc.. 18's look teh goods tho.. on a gc8 they should fill the guards nicely.. |

17inch tyres are usually significantly cheaper to buy...
17ich rims are generally lighter 17inch rims still look very nice on a GC8. 18s look better on a GD+

General rule of thumb, for all out performance, going up an inch in diametre from oem. Vehicle dynamics aren't jeopardised, wheel clearance is still acceptable. 18's on the street on my00 isnt an issue, and you can find some very light wheels, more so rubber is the biggest weight culprit, so keeping width's modest and less tyre wall will save some weight as well.

I find when buying rims that u can get 17s that look a little big by the spokes connecting right to the edge of the lip, below is a picture of my car with 17s on and they fill the gaurds quite nicely.

Thanks guys.
Whilst im not doing any track work now, it's possible i may get into it in the future. For the time being, i just want to build a tuff street car with all the right mods. Explicit, I never took into account the weight of rubber. Will this make a noticable difference in ride/handling? Im not sure which rim i'll be buying but definately volk or work so im already saving weight here. Also, how harsh would the car feel on 35 rubber compared to 40 on 18's with coilovers? Could you actually feel the difference? I guess the 35 has a stiffer sidewall. Final question guys..imagine this was a poll and i were to ask which of the 2 rim sizes you would pick for GC8..what would it be if cost was not an issue and you were chasing the best rim/tyre size for handling performance? Im looking at Misters list and believe that 17's may be the way to go afterall. Thx again guys. |

18's FTW if it's looks your after. Check out how my wheels look bigger and fill the arches more than the rest (and thats with superlows, imagine coilovers.....) some of the other rims are 18's but the style of rim plays a big part on how big it looks
If handling was your priority I would go 17's with good quality rubber... Just my 2cents worth.... Scooter. |

id go lightwieght 18's personally, low profile tyre. less sidewall flex, more cred.

Hey darkmoose,
They look good mate, fills the guards nicely. The other thing i have to take into account is the size of my rotors if i were to go 18's. Although I'll be ordering DBA4000 front and rear they make look somewhat dicky. At this stage i just cant justify the purchace of a big brake kit. Cheers |
