Default knock knocking on heaven's door-woah!

Hi All,

Long time no post!

I have a question and it seems to point to the worst credile outcome - big end bearing failure.

While my car was idling, I heard this faint metallic, it sounded like my TBE exhaust or there abouts was squeaking (it was loose tho) so I thought nothing of it, so I drove off.

I know it hurts to say, but as I was cruising I can hear the squeaky noise getting louder... and then bang(!) I lost power and this horrible knocking noise became really audiable! Lucky for me I wasnt far from home and it was downhill so I let my car do the rolling - I didn't accelerate (I kept my foot on the clutch) I did not see any smoke from the rear (maybe cos I didnt accerlerate?).

As I pulled up into drive way I turned the engine off. I started her up again and the horrible knocking noise was still there. Popped the bonnet and it sounded like it was coming from around cylinder #2. Looked at my boost gauge and it was erratic as.

Ok, as time goes by I would more than likely rememeber little things that may contribute to this, but right now (as would most ppl who are faced in this situation are) I am stunned and hurt maybe traumatised.

Any sound (pardon the pun) advice out there?

The shit has hit the fan. You probably smashed the ring lands on piston 2. You wern't driving hard, so the damage may be repairable, but I suggest you budget for a new block as the worst case scenario. Budget around $5K for a replacement stock ej207 (OEM forged) including labour.

5k for a 207 with labour seems pretty cheap. Also just hope u don't have head damage as that can cost more

happened to me once, no smoke or anything, just an aweful noise, i think it held in for a couple of weeks before it finally died in the ass drop in a new engine and away ya go lol

I know its wishful thinking, but can the turbo have an effect on the engine if it is blown? exhaust loose, gasket blown. The boost gauge is erratic...

Erratic gauge is definitely a problem with compression in one cylinder, so it very well could be a ring land...a knocking sound is normally a bearing too, which you could have well damaged also.

Either way, its an engine out job.

OUCH! sorry to hear it but,

Sounds exactly what happened to our car after christmas after returning from overseas.
Number 2 big end bearing had gone.
Rebuild was not a option as labuor costs would,nt make it viable.

New EJ207 short block $3300[ozzy park]
Recondition old heads machining, valves and springs
STi oil pump[new]
Replaced idler pulleys odds and ends[new]

$7000-$8000 including Labour

Saun or Nick

I just need to find a way to ship it back to Perth - wonder if it can be considered as a scrap car so it can be cheaper to ship
