+1 for Crank angle sensor. Starter motor would be a constant issue rather than intermittent I reckon.

starter motor is not always constant no, i had an intermittent staring problem with my 97 GF8
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanicals/11921-start-issues.html it turned out to be my starter motor, was well worn/flogged out. with mine it sounded like the battery was going flat as it was turning over, id leave it for a second and it would start like normal, ie starter was not strong enough. had an exchange starter put in and now all is good, at the same time i also had my chassis earth fixed as it was loose!! id be checking ya starter |

IF the crank angle sensor was gone. The car would not start at all, even on a push start.

Starter motor I would suggest. The bearing at the end of the armature wears down from dirt and shit and then the armature is off centre and the magnets touch. The solenoid then doesn't have enough juice to fire the gear onto the flywheel. If you've done a clutch then this is fairly likely as the dust gets in the bearing and wears it away. If this is the case pull out the starter and buy the $2 brass bush that fits in the end of the starter and it will all be good. As a note this is a very intermitent problem. the clicking you hear is the solenoid trying to engage the starter.

Check all terminals for the solenoid, starter motor, relays etc (with a multimeter if possible) to rule out an electrical fault. If it doesn't get the correct amperage going to the starter motor it won't have enough torque to get the engine to turn over. If that's all good, give it a wack with a nice solid spanner. Yes I'm serious.

yes, have to agree here, sounds like the starter motor, when they start to go it will sound like you have a flat battery (slow turning of the starter motor) if it don't start at all, give the starter a tap with a hammer and it should start, if it does this its a clear indication the starter motor is fark'd
i changed the one on my missus's pulsar last week as it was behaving exactly like this, took 10 min to take it out, took it to wanneroo wreckers and swapped it for an recon one ($132) i imagine the subi one would be in the same ball park. 10 min to put the recon one back in and you're away |

i paid $185 for a recond unit ( was going to cost about $120 to rebuild mine but was too farrrked ) and got a w/shop to fit plus they checked/fixed earths and terminals, all up paid $285. i didnt have the time etc to do myself plus felt safer with a w/shop doing it as im not too confident doing some stuff on the WRX

99.99% sure it will be the crank angle sensor.
I've had the exact same problem. Intermitttant starting until the thing was truly fucked. Read the ECU error code and it will pop up. To replace they can be expensive new. Try JWS or any of the workshops for a 2nd hand one. J |

Update: I've taken it to tenagah and I've been told it is the starter motor, something to do with the solenoid i guess since my central locking also fails at times. Getting it inspected, quoted and done within a couple weeks!! Appreciate all the help =]
