Hoping for prices below $200 per tyre but may be able to stretch it to $300.
So basically, what tyres do you think are best for this rim size under $200, and what are best for under $300?
Have you given the Falken range a thought? The FK451 and ST115 are worth considering, they are pretty grippy tyres while not too noisy, and definitely not expensive, probably in the just over $200/tyre region. For 17x7 rims, the appropriate tyre size would be 215/40-17 for a 2000 or older model WRX/STi and 215/45-17 for a bug-eye and onwards WRX. Keep in mind that you need to keep the load ratings legal, I think it's 87V but I could be wrong.

Umm... please explain? whats the legal load limit? is it what you mentioned, 87V? You have to have the load ratings above this?

Yeah you need to keep the load ratings the same or higher than what the original tyres were rated. On the classic shapes I think it's 87V, higher for the newer models.

Ok, so if i go up to 83W is that still rated higher? or i'd have to get 87W or higher?

Coz i realize the letter represents the speed it can go up to and it goes in order - V, H, W, Y, Z (Z being rated for the highest speeds of course)

Thanx for the link. Answers my question about load figures and stuff. Very handy.
Also found out that my WRX does come standard as 87V. Found this info by searching my car on the "car research" section of carsales.com. It's here if anyone else is interested.

I had toyo proxies and they were noisy and had average grip. I now have Federals. They are made here in Aus and they are z rated so they can handle speeds upto around 250km/h. they are made from that silica compound, quiet and grip better than my proxies. The Proxies cost about 320 per tyre and the federals cost 195. The federals are a 225 width though and the standard size for an MY01 is 215.

I heard the hancook sport k104s were excelent for around 200 a tyre from midland tyre wholesalers. A friend just bought them.

I have just had fitted from Wheels World some Hankook Ventus RS2. 215/40's 17 inch. They have a semi r-comp type look to them and I must say I'm rather impressed. They have a reinforced outer and inner wall also. They are $270each and very nice indeed.

are they quiet or do you get more road noise because of the R-Comp like tread pattern?
