looking at the crown of the piston (easy to recognised a forged 02), or if your lucky- underneath it to see the difference between the early and later type hyperneuretic's.

Its a bit concerning knowing that a person could sell a "crate motor" with EJ20 stamped on it and it could be either/or a 205 or 207.

Spose the best chance is to get it from a well known vendor.

Get over it, Subaru do it from the factory. The EJ207 that came in the Aus V6 STi block stamped EJ20 Eng No:EJ207... had forged pistons, a Jap Spec WRX Ra same year, block stamped EJ20 Eng No. EJ207...has cast pistons! So yes if it has a semi closed block it's EJ207 but caveat emptor, it could still have Hyper Crappy Pistons.

Hyper Crappies and the holy grail forgies below:

I thought the EJ207 was fully closed decked rather than semi as shown in the pics above. Even my 2.5 is much more closed decked than that pic above.

EJ205 piston on the left, EJ207 piston on the right.

If you look out for those differences, plus the semi-closed deck block, you can EASILY tell when you're getting an EJ207.
