Default Brake Rotors

Hey All,

i had my car serviced today at City Subaru. All was good apart from the front rotors.

They say that they need to be replaced, i thoguht they might just need skimming but the guy said they are made from a softer material so they work better but wear quicker.

i was under the impression that rotors should last a hell of alot longer than 3 years (my car is 05).

So, what i want to know, without me going out and checking. Is this true? or are they just trying to get me to fork out a grand because they can.

Cheers

Rob

A grand for rotors????
WTF???
If anything they should make the pads softer as they are designed to wear anyway. Sounds like a load of crap to me. Best bet is to rip of a front wheel and check for any uneven wear on both sides of the rotor. Also have a look at how thick they are. Im sure someone here can tell you the minimum specs. If they do need replacing go elsewhere to do it. Subaru will rip you a new asshole.

min thickness is 22mm and ya can get slotted front rotors for heaps less. don't bother with geniune brake disc's and pads they are fkn rip off.

For $950 you can get a front pair of DBA5000's 2 piece, which are pretty much as good as it gets before you start looking at Alcons/AP Racing/Ceramic type stuff.

Why do Subaru always try to rip people with rotors?

the cost was for 2 rotors and pads.

they then tried to sell me non genuine ones for $550.

i could understand if they needed to be skimed a bit, but not new ones after 3 years.

I have good contacts for brakes so ill ring up tomorrow and get prices.

might whip off the wheels on wednesday night and have a look.

From previous experience i can completely understand that your rotors are worn out on your first set of pads. Look at a late model bmw/vw/audi. The pads and rotors in them last around 40000km. Both have to be replaced as a set, as the compound in the pads chews at the disc, in a attempt to stop them from squeaking and provide good fade resistance.

To tell if the rotors are due you will need a special disc rotor caliper, not just a normal set. If the rotors are undersized or close to it at their thinnest point (within 1/2 a mm) then your rotors need to be replaced, or if they are cracked/badly corroded.

I would go aftermarket rotors though, save heaps for a product that will work just as well, provided you get a quality set.

When I bought my car from Osborne Park the brakes were really squeeky so I went back and they said that the pads needed replacing so they did that and tried to skim the rotors. They then rang me and said that the rotors were too far gone to skim so they said I needed new front rotors. I said it wasn't my problem as I had only had the car for a few weeks. Eventually after a bit of arguing they replaced the front rotors with DBA 4000's and new brake pads all round for free
