Anyone had or is currently running Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Star Spec's?

Just wanted to get some local experiences/info as I'm Seriously considering
getting a set of these, I've heard good reports from Subaru owners in the
US and I can get them at ridiculously cheap prices.

Before I get told just get RE's, I know RE's are good but the prices are a bit rich.

I'm tossing up between the Z1's, RS2's, 888's or KU36's, the Z1's are
currently in the lead of which ones to get.

Here's a Tirerack test on youtube between the RE11's, Z1's, KU36's and AD08's, its not a full on comparison/test but gives an idea on how close these tyres are together with Tireracks results just a pity they didn't do any wear or heat cycle tests.

I have been told by an EVO driver the KU36's are crap in the wet.

What tyres are you wanting? Street or R-comp?

888's are an rcomp.
RE11's, Z1's are a street.

You looking to run two sets of wheels or just replace the existing tyres? Keep in consideration the mileage you do, if you don't commute alot just put on the 888's and put up with a little more road noise. Yoki A050M seem to be the 'instant on' r comp of choice at the moment.

John looking at tyres for track days so after R-comps/semi slicks.

I read there are different versions of the Z1's and the sport star
spec have been used on the track with great success as they heat
up quickly, have good grip and so on.

I've read that info from the US, over east and Japan but you can't
believe everything you read hence asking the crew here what they
think.

Jamie I'm going to have 2 sets, 1 for street/daily use and 1 for track
applications.

The skidpan session was extremely fun so I need 2 sets

If you have 2 sets get a proper set of R comps. most of the 18" sizes average $500 - $600 a corner (locally). IF you can get cheaper r comps, just get them, you'll learn to heat cycle and how quickly they come on and come off, wear rates, rotating them etc etc. Once you do that you'll have some real feedback to help you on the purchase of the second set. Everyone will have a different opinion as everyone has a different driving style and expectation.

Also a medium compound is what i'd recommend, the wear rates aren't as good but they 'come on' quicker. Especially handy if want to give the skidpan a red hot go and throw in a couple of hot laps (3-4 at a time) at wanners/collie.

Best option is to get some 17" rims and put on 235/45/17 of either:
1. Bridgestone RE55 if you are doing more circuit work than autokhana. A great dry weather tyre
2. Dunlop D03 R1 (softer) or H1 (harder...last longer) as a good all round tyre better than RE55 in wet and come on song quicker.
3. Yokohama A050...similar to Dunlop and possibly slightly cheaper...another great all round tyre

There is more choice in 17's, though Dean ran 18's (Dunlop) in Targa West with (obviously) good results.

The US auto-x racers can't use r-comps either, so that is why they race on extreme summer tyres (RE11's, Z1's, AD08's etc).

Get a proper r-comp if you have 2 sets of rims (RE55's, AD50's, R888's etc). The RE55's are the tried and tested r-comp with many successful outings on Perth based Subarus. That said the new Yoko AD50's are the farking bomb. But don't go for the AD048's.
