Default My first Mods

Hey Guys,

I just brought a MY06 STI from Sydney, got it sent over from rail. The car already has an exhaust, king springs and a XB Kit installed by MRT.

http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performan...it-Article.pdf

I am keen to start learning, from my mates and community members. I did a little reading on the forums here today and i'm thinking of replacing the stock VF43 thrust bearing design turbo to a VF22 IHI roll bearing turbo which apparently can run up to 25psi. However will my engine even be able to support this huge increase?

Also whats the difference between a thrust bearing and roll bearing turbo?

Regards,
Clint

VF22 is an old style turbo....VF34 would be a better option, but its still not a huge upgrade from your VF43.

I am very happy running my AVO450s.

Your car has already had an ECUTek tune so your options for a retune are Maximum Motorsport or Race Torque ( I recommend Race Torque ) unless you want to replace the ECU or go a piggy back.

Have a chat to whichever you decide to use and see what their suggestions are.

You don't need to run 25PSI in a 2.5 to make it hammer.

VF22

The VF22 has the largest potential for peak horsepower. In other words, in the IHI model range, the VF 22 supports the highes boost levels. It is capable of running up to 25 psi. Because it is a roller bearing turbo, turbo lag is minimal...the boost comes on around 3300 rpm. Expect to max out the VF22 somewhere in the 400-450 hp range.

This turbo has the highest output potential of all of the IHI VF series turbos and is the best choice for those who are looking for loads of top end power. The top end power however, does not come without a cost. The VF22 spools significantly slower than the rest of the IHI models due to the larger P20 exhaust housing and is much less suited for daily driving than some of the other models. Although the largest VF series turbo, the VF22 is not quite optimal for stroked engines or those who wish to run more than 20PSI of boost.

VF30

The VF30 is commonly considered the best bang for the buck turbo in the IHI VF series line. A relatively new model the VF30 features the same exhaust housing as the VF24 but a larger compressor side similar to the VF22. The combination of these two parts results in increased output potential without the lag associated with the VF22. Although it doesn't offer the top end supremacy of the VF22, the VF30 is a great compromise between these unit and the quicker spooling models.

VF34

The VF34 is nearly identical to the VF30, with the same exhaust housing and compressor. However the VF34 goes back to the ball bearing design, and in doing so achieves full boost approximately 500RPM sooner than the comparable VF30. The VF34 is the most recent IHI design and as such costs slightly more than its counterpart. Top end performance and maximum output are identical to the 30.

From reading it still seems the VF22 has the edge - just with more lag which i'm willing to put up with. It's also cheaper!

My question is though, can my car take it?

Go with a Front Mount IC and get the car tuned.

The stock VF43 can handle some good boost.

This will give you a better idea on what the difference the car will feel like then you can make a decision if to upgrade from there.

the VF43 with minor mods will get 300hp at the hubs with little to no boost increase from the stock 14.5psi.

any major mod needs a retune to be able to get real performance out of it!
cant get 'bolt on power' just like you used to....i would agree with luigi - find yourself some supporting mods like intercooler, injectors, fuel pump... then get a more aggressive tune with what you have!

My mods as follows:

3" TBE
Walbro Fuel Pump
De-capped Injectors
K&N Panel Filter
Snorkus Mod (Resonator Removed)
VERSO Dyno Tune

I'm running stock boost and after the dyno tune my car netted 295hp at the hubs with stock boost from the VF43. Still running stock top mount as well.

The 2.5L love a VERSO tune easily over 400nM at the hubs as well.

Totally different drive from the stock car.
