Default Help! - Fuel Issues

Heya

I have owned the car for about 2 weeks now but noticed an interesting issue..

Ive filled the tank to full and the guage reads that its full... Ive reset the trip counter and it apprently only takes about 249kms to use a full tank?

I went to go fill it up thinking thats not right.. i should be getting better fuel economy than that so went to go fill it back up and it only took 20litres or just under that...

when i drive up hills it goes back up but when leveling out on the road or going back down it again goes low on fuel...

would that be my fuel sender thing in the fuel tank itsself? has anyone else had issues like that before? I have had a major service done on it yesterday and they said I had to supply the sender as they loose 23% on the part if they purchase it or something stupid.. Ive got a mate at autopro pricing one up for me to see the costs..

bah!

My STI does the same thing.......from 1/4 full to full it only takes 28 litres (under 1/2 of it's capacity).....

YAY I always have 1/2 a tank in reserve!

Take a 20L jerry can of fuel in the car with you and drive till the fuel runs out.

Then take note of how many km you were able to do.

Sounds like the fuel sender is sitting to High in the tank and when the tank is below half the fuel gauge reads empty.

They just work of a float device don't they not electronic?

has the fuel pump been replaced at some stage? maybe the fuel sender float bar was damaged/bent during the install (the in tank pump bolts into the fuel sender unit) i imagine it would be easy to do if you were a bit of a gumby (not saying you are, previous owner or mechanic)

try JWS as its a subaru specific item, can't buy them from autopro/repco etc, the sender houses the fuel pump too, might be a good time to upgrade to a walbro

my bet is that you will remove the old one and all it will be is a bent wire on the float

the black box thing on the end of the wire is the tank level sender

hope this helps

There are two senders in the tank:
1 on the right (pump) side & one on the left sub tank side.

If one fails the gauge only reads half a tank for a full swing of the gauge.

The output values from the two senders are required for accuracy (median value between the two = what the gauge reads).

The black thing on the end of the wire is the float for the level sensor!
The sensor itself is hidden on the other side of the unit in that photo.
