Default Misfiring on boost

My car misfires as soon as boost comes on, it splutters and spills out black smoke it does it threw all the gears
I unplugged the afm and this problem just went away car drivers perfectly???? very confused. check engine light came on though.
i have tried another afm meter and still the same problem, just changed the spark plugs then..
any ideas would be appreciated
car is an 03 WRX
and i take it its not safe to drive without afm connected :P

Without it connected it will run on richest setting. Checked your actual air filter, plugged air filters mess up the A/F ratio causing black smoke.

It sounds like a bad afm or another sensor or bad wiring in the circuit. Try testing the sensor.

I had this problem a while back now, could be lots of things:

- Eathing issue (Do earthing mod as a start)
- Plugs (NKG Platinums are good)
- AFM (Try cleaning your first one with contact cleaner, ensure no oiled pod filter)
- Leaks in intake system, post airflow meter.
- Electrical issues (Alarm or otherwise)
- Cam/Crank Angle sensors (unlikely)
- Bad Fuel (unlikely)
- Dying Fuel Pump
- Coil Packs (unlikely)

Is it intermittant, or pretty consistant? My misfiring turned out to be an electrical issue with my brant alarm module, which was intermittanly cutting fuel or ignition and being a bitch in general.

If you do run a scan on the ECU to pickup the codes, just remember there will be a code in there from you having unplugged the AFM, so that may not be the root cause of the problem.

If the car is misbehaving and not throwing a CEL at all to indicate a problem, it can be hard to figure out where it's getting stuck. The list i put above adds up to a lot of $$$, i went through a lot of that to sort my issue out.

As you're not getting a CEL, and you've said you've tried a different AFM and the problem remained? If this is the case i reckon it's an electrical issue somewhere. If you haven't tried a spare AFM .. try one.

Dave didn't you replace the injectors with sti pinks?but you are still running the factory Wrx computer,it would cause it to run rich, best to go to ASG and get a Verso tune done.
