you can purchase these to hold the gears in place while you removing & installing the timing belt. Dont use them for undoing the center bolt of the cam wheel

always when you do a timing belt turn the engine over 720deg by hand just to make sure no valves touch. The lines on each cam are lining up with the other cam? and lining up with their marks in the timing cover? Then it should be fine. make sure the belt guide isnt rubbing, and start it up. listen to what the nosie is.

Im assuming that you have done a service....?? If you have drained the oil it can have a rattle whilst the oil is building up pressure.....

Do these clamps definitely fit the subaru engines
I have seen these in auto one but they want $150 each

Thanks so much for all the help- got it all fitted now. It appears as though the noise was from having half a tooth out- that was the only thing I could see... took it off, refitted and sounds like new now.
