Default Timing Belt Problem- Please Help!

Hi,

Can someone please help me! When I took off the timing belt, the two cams on the right spun as i pulled the belt away.

So after hours of playing around- I am pretty sure I have lined everything up finally because I turned it by hand and it all seemed to go ok.

When I actually started to car on the otherhand, I heard an awefull rattle and turned the engine straight off.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do?

I am a bit concerned that something is out... but it all looks lined up.

I am about to go insane!

Theres a very good chance you have bent the valve stems

section 22 of the attached pdf explains how the cams should be rotated to aviod damage

Do you know if the cam shafts can be out of time, even though all the lines are lined up?

Def not a tooth out- checked and checked again. It was a slight rattle, I cant see anything touching when I turn it by hand.

Do you know if you can turn it over by hand if the crank if 180 degrees out or will it lock up- this now seems to be a slight possiblility.

The marks are easily misinterpreted, even by mechanics not familiar with Subaru. EJ engines are NOT timed on TDC, they are timed at a mid point where all the pistons are equally down the bores. You can do what you like with the cams and you won't bend the valves if you have the crank in the correct position. Do not use the arrow on the crank pulley, the mark you need is a small grain of rice size indent at the back of the crank belt gear. it lines up just under the crank angle sensor. All your arrows on your cams should be at 2 o'clock and your lines lined up.
It is possible to line all the marks up and still be wrong, but if the arrows are at 2 o'clock and you're on the notch on the crank (not the arrow) you are OK.
