When you say it's getting hot.... How high is it on the gauge?

if I sat there and did nothing it would go right to the top I usually shut her down before that thou, now ill just turn the air con on. It got to the stage yesterday when I could smell the coolant

If you can smell it you have a leak buddy.

Are you where are you checking the coolant?

At the header tank (metal one)?

both the side and header, it only smells when I let it get really hot, Im pretty sure Im not losing coolant. I rarely have to top it up. The smell has only happened once and that was yesterday while sitting in traffic, I shut her down straight away.

The fact that today when I turned on the air con and the fans came on and she cooled down almost instantly definately points to the fact of a sensor issue more than anything else.

if its getting really hot it might be boiling and pushing coolant out the over flow tank.
