No it's not normal to have pieces of metal stuck to the plug......you will have some fine particles (powdered metal) though.

Subaru checked it out and metal piece was edge of pinion tooth. Because no noises or performance impact diff left in place and will be replaced under warranty IF it fails.

the rears are viscous yeah? So it chips a tooth and they wait for it to fail - awesome!

drain fluid from diff, and drive up and down the freeway till the bearings die, top up with oil return for warranteeeee! :P

When I had a diff replaced, I made sure I spent the weekend prior at "AHG" doing a hell of a lot of helis.

Worked a treat.

When I had a diff replaced due to noise, they replaced it no questions asked. That was at Subaru Osb Pk.

anyone point me to a good diff shop to have rear diff side bearings done on an STI (out of warranty), i've got movement on the right rear, off throttle whine/groan and it's let some oil out with the movement me thinks...

Any of the subaru specialist workshops in the sticky will be able to do it.
