Default new gearbox question

Hi peoples,

I beleive my gearbox is stuffed as I can't use 2nd gear without a terrible grinding sound. In antipation of that diagnosis, what are my options?

Also, taking into account, I have a heavy duty clutch that was fitted before I knew of the stress it would be putting on the gearbox.

Thanks,

You have several options:

1. Replacement stock gearbox
2. PPG gearbox (straight cut bling)
3. STi 6 speed conversion. I think this costs around $5k?
4. Holinger dog box. I think this costs about a kidney? Perhaps only a liver.

From 1-10, that's all his options. From 1500 to 120 grand and everything in between. Nowhere on his post did he specify a dollar target.

As for your autobox, the trp or c&v racematic option is going to be on the heavy side of ten large. If you pay for some r&d and act as guine pig the top local auto specialists should be able to help out. You might end up saving a few grand but is this worth the headaches? Then again, unchattered waters usually lead to the ship sinking on its maiden voyage.

Have to realise that performance costs money, but what's more critical, reliable perfomance costs even more.

wise words indeed

i think i've been guinea pig enough times to have my brain finally register the pain that associate with it, so i'd give that option a miss.

the search continues.............

6 speed is the value for money choice, if your going to mod your car and/or drive it hard. It wont have to be rebuilt or maintenanced like a dog box, and its cheaper than the decent dog boxes that are available.

You can pick up a dog box for the same money, but you get what you pay for. I'm not a fan of half dog boxes, because if one of your stock gears goes kaput, theres a good chance that you'll end up lunching the dog gears also.

Otherwise, stock replacement. If you search in the right place, you can pick up a replacement 5 speed set for $1500ish.

If your gearbox isnt physically broken IE the synchros are buggered, you can get the box rebuilt for a similar price.

the 02-06 wrx boxes are good value, nice ratio's and....I think a bit stronger than the previous models.

I will be thinking about this when the time comes..
