Default Advantages of STI Lower control arms

Hey guys,

Whats the go with the STI ones over the standard steels ones? is it just for the weight advantage or is there more to it than that? also, if you have a whiteline ALK already and steel LCAs can you use that same alk with the alloy ones?
hahaha and one more, if you've already got a LCA H brace, are the alloy ones going to make any difference at all?

They are stronger and also allow you to run spherical joint sway bar links which have almost zero play compared to regular links that have rubber or poly bushes

Also, the alloy arms are 2 piece. You can remove the rear pivot, rotate it 180 degrees and add spacers to give you extra castor cheaply and easily.
Ive got mine rotated with a 3mm spacer. But you can run up to 8mm spacer if you replace the rear pivot mounting bolts with longer high tensile bolts.

Contrary to popular belief, the STI alloy front arms are not significantly lighter than WRX Steel arms. Just stronger.

If you already have an ALK on your steel arms, it is 100% compatible with the STI alloy arms.

One other thing... will GD LKA's fit on a GC8 or will it cause more problems than its worth?

Yes, GDB alloy front arms can be persuaded to fit, but its a pain because the front bushing on the arm is longer and takes a bit of force (and possibly grinding) to get it to fit into the GC8 front cross-member. Also, GD alloy arms are 10mm longer than GC alloy arms, so you will end up with some extra camber, and possibly scrubbing depending on what width/offset wheels you are running.

And if you do run GD front arms, you probably should install the longer GD rear arms too to keep the track width of your car the same between the two axles. But if you do the rears too, you'll also need the drive shafts so you don't pull on the inner CV and accidentally pop the stub clips out while driving and munch a spline. And then there's the extra camber/scrubbing to deal with too.

In the end, its better to stick with all GC8 arms.

The weight difference fyi:

Steel GC arm - 4.5Kg
Aly GD arm - 3.9Kg

Only a saving of 1.2Kg but its unsprung weight so makes a good difference. I'm sure the GC aly arms will be slightly lighter too

Need some advice on this please.

This is for the GF8 wagon. I am about to put a bit of whiteline gear in the car plus the GD Alloy lower contol arms. I am concerened about a few things though. The list of parts I am looking at getting are below. I have also emailed Whiteline direct about this, but just wanted to be sure, hence I am asking here too. Especially on the drive shaft question.

Sway bars
Front 24mm bar BSF20XZ
Rear 27mm bar BSR20XXXZ

Bushings
Front W0404-24
Rear KBR21-24

Links
Front KLC30
Rear KLC26

Anti lift kit KCA319M

Roll centre correction kit KCA313

Questions.

1. Changing to the GD, will this mean having to change any of the GF8 whiteline items in the front to GDB? Front sway bar mounts? ALK?

2. Do I need longer drive shafts in the front to compensate for the extra 10mm in track each side?

1. No. I dont think so. Though if you havent already ordered the whiteline gear it wouldnt hurt to use the GDB front sway bar from whiteline. for the ALK it doesnt matter. If you already have the GC8 swaybar, you can get away with using longer sway bar links. This is what I'll be doing. Also... those KLC30 front links arent the right ones you need for alloy arms. You need the ball jointed links off the GDB arms. They look like this: http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...L2BClPw_35.jpg

2. Yes.
