Just make sure you clean the fuck out of the mating surfaces with a razor and some thinners/brake cleaner, also get some 3bond grey and run that over the halfmoons on the gasket itself. I ran my covers through the robowash last time i did them.

Always get oem gaskets. Anything aftermarket is a waste of time imo. Give the engine crossmember and your headers a steamclean if you've got the time. You'll find that if there's oil that has built up over the time they've been leaking, you might find there'll still be smoke pouring from your passenger side header, and drips over your driveway...

You want to apply the sealant on the two shapes on the top of the gasket in the image as seen above.

Once you have got the rocker cover off make sure you change ALL the seals (spark plug tubes and half moons). Then put a thin smear of Three Bond (M40510 can be bought from Subaru or Holden)on the half moons.
When you have done both sides I make sure there is NO oil in the exhaust heat sheilds if fitted as it will get hot and catch on fire.

You should only need to undo the Left Hand Engine mount, as the left hand rocker cover was the trickiest for me! Once you undo the L/H mount i had to use a leaver to get the rocker cover out through the bottom (had it on a hoist) so not sure if you have access to one as it makes it so much easier! I also removed the oil filler tube because i pulled the cover from underneath!

Definitely get a rocker cover KIT! This includes main gaskets, spark plug tube gaskets (the two inner gaskets) and the bolt seal/rubbers.

Is there really need for raising the engine to get the covers off? I need to do this as well, I've been putting it off for a year.

I didn't raise it at all, simply undone the bottom engine mount nut and levered the engine to the side to clear cams so slide out the cover! Didn't raise it as such or very little!

There's very little room no matter which Subaru you work on.

i never jack the engine up, just make sure when you have the rocker cover in place, the seal is still in the groove and hasn't been knocked by the cam.
as to putting the sealant on the corners, i put a 'dolop' on the head where the joins of the cam tunnels bolt on, at the front of the cam of course, and i always run a smear around the bottom of the gasket just for added security.
good luck with it anyway
