Oh and also my car does have a clicking noise on it when the button is pressed, so it may actually be a low gas issue... but im not 100% sure as im new to the subaru world... i'll try suss it out myself by heading down to the place tomorrow on my lunch break =)

Short story: I have a spare compressor I bought for my MY99 - chasing $100 for it.

Long story - back in March I bought this 2nd hand compressor for $100 from a PWRX member, then three days later another PWRX member listed a brand new unit for $400, so I bought that one as well. I just had that brand new compressor fitted a couple of weeks ago by STechnic, and so the spare compressor I bought in March is no longer needed.

For the suspicious out there, I ALSO have the compressor which came off my car, which suffered some kind of bearing failure. I'm not trying to sell that one - it's still sitting in my garage.

The $100 one spins freely, and definitely doesn't make the bearing noises my stuffed compressor does.

gone in and ive found out some info, first of all...

When the gas gets low in a subaru (not sure about other models) basicly it has a shutoff switch which means when it gets low the compressor wont kick in at all.

I was told by the professional that if you turn the switch on when you have low gas, is like driving around with no oil in your car, so if you know your low on gas, DON'T TURN YOUR AIRCON ON!!
