Default V6 (my00) Wrx V V6 Sti

From experience, what would be the advantages/disadvantages of swapping a standard my00 wrx engine for a complete V6 sti engine.

Standard:
ej20t
td04

V6 Sti:
ej207
vf28
sodium filled valves
forged internals (i think)
better flowing heads

what else???

Advice appreciated.

Toni

semi closed deck (?) - can withstand a little bit more boost

Not sure u would want to use the internals if its a 2nd hand block as it may have been used, read "abused"

The v6's have the EJ20t still, I think the 01-02 was the 205 & the 03+ has the 207. As mentioned the 207 has the semi-closed block.

The only other thing I can think of would be more aggressive cams. The internals are forged but they're not "forged" in the same way after market gear would be.

Whats the G.. O.. Tone, you looking to tinker?

i get 150kw atw now with the standard motor, 3" and link.

either go a vf34 and larger fuel pump or the engine swap.

hunting for around 200kw.

tossing up which one to go for.

if you are thinking engine swap, go 2.2 or 2.5

Tony,

you would be better off with a later model STI short motor as they had better pistons, rods, crank and a semi closed deck. I can tell you from experience that the short motor that came out of my RA had no closed deck at all.

The only thing you will miss out on is the nice STI heads and cams going down this path unless you get a complete 02+ STI motor retain the heads and feel some MoTeC love to get the variable valve timing running. Or source just some V6 STI heads from somewhere and bolt em on and stick with your current ECU.

Cheers,

BP

Fred,
Interesting idea, add more to the decision list.

Would the drivetrain cope with a 2.2/2.5 conversion as its stock with an uprated clutch. or is it up to driving style?

Blaise,

In other words, the swap is not so much of an ipgrade unless I go for a later model motor?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Each option has a win and a loss.

The version 6 sti motor gives you the good heads (win) but the slightly lower spec bottom end.(Loss) And I would expect most of these are getting a bit long in the tooth as they came out of a 2000 model car at best. Might find its tired and needs a rebuild.

The later model STI has the tougher bottom end so you win here but lose on the AVCS heads which you cant use to best effect without an ECU to control them. Maybe see if you can retain the heads and put in non AVCS cams and running gear. (I am sure you could will just eb a case of how much....) If this could be done at the right price I reckon this would be your best option.

Speak to someone who knows over there and let me know if its a goer. I have a good contact over here who should be able to get you the motor at the right price

Re your drivetrain living or dying, it all comes down to how you drive, although more power will just make it easier to bust stuff but not necesarily be a given.
