What's the reason for reusing the stock fuel sock?

The theory is that the OEM sock on the bottom of the pump flows better and doesn't "fuel surge" as much as the supplied walbro one. (assuming you bought the walbro with the Subaru fitting kit)

^^^
This is something I've heard many times before, but then I've also heard that the Walbro supplied sock has changed design/shape/something wanky, and isn't such a problem any more. Also, question, can the OEM sock which could be 10+ years old, be better than a brand new one of a different make; Walbro sock? These are all just questions, I'm not trying to be difficult.

i havnt had any issues with the supplied walbro sock

i didnt see the point in replacing the fuel pump but leaving the dirty old filter on the end

as above. i used the replacement sock myself. I do get fuel surge, but subarus are notorious for it
