Subarus bearing failure issue was due to poor material use in the bearings
I presume this is just an extra precaution to prevent bearing failure.
Being a harder material I'd say it would be harder for parts of the crank to wear away...

The story is: Subaru changed the material in the crankshaft bearings, removing lead from the material due to environmental concerns, lead being a heavy metal. I think they may have changed to copper.
This made the bearings harder. Due to this, the bearings lost some of their 'embedding' capability, that is, when foreign material, eg metal particals enter between the crank and bearings, they embed in the bearing metal, so as not to damage the journals. So when minute particals of metal entered, which is normal, they would not embed and would start to damage the journals, which would then destroy the bearings.
For this reason, Subaru began nitriding the cranks. Harder bearings, harder cranks.

What capacity does a 2.5 crank in a 2.0 make?

Not flaming you Rossco for posting up, its good your sharing parts on the cheap! i love it, just about there spiel was abit here and there, thats why i mentioned it.

If johnvk7 is correct then it all makes sense, harder bearings = need for harder crank. simple

Oh and i didnt know what FIIK ment... hahaha its a good one, cheers rossco

I fail to understand why they changed to an inferior bearing material with disasterous results to 'save the whales' yet are happy to still use lead wheel weights??????

I know, let's make brake pads out of cheese and cabin filters from asbestos.......

PS, that spiel was pure sales bullshit.

They've done it before, the paint used on the 2-pot calipers was changed 3-4 years ago because it was dangerous to the environment.

I wasn't being a sook by saying I was 'fucked if i know' Russ.... I was saying I was fucked if I knew how they came to their conclusion.....

there was no stroppiness here lol! (maybe I was just pissed that my engine has still not been delivered)

Talking of the bearing materials has anyone else noticed that the ACl race bearings are still lead babbit coated, but the Cosworth ones aren't, even though ACL manufactures both?
