Default EJ20T weird internal engine noise

HI brains trust.

Have developed a clack, clack clack noise from my Version 5 RA. I have previously done a big end before in a v5 two door and this sounds completely different. Where the big end would knock faster or slower as the revs raise & fall, this clack clack clack comes and goes randomly.

I have done the screw drive stethoscope bit and reckon its maybe valve train related. Its a real metallic sound and not the normal doink doink noise?

Have also replaced the cam belt tensioner as matter of course.

any suggestions from budding engine builders would be welcome.
Thanks

Could be any number of things, upload a video to youtube! If its more of a metallic banging it could also be something external. Does it have the stock exhaust manifold? could be the heat shields. Engine mount broken? Or you could have sheared a piston in half, which would be awesome.

Does it go away while in gear and the clutch depressed? And come on strong while in gear and rolling, no accel/clutch/brake?

thanks for reply

1.No have checked for loose heat shields etc
2.Does not go away when clutch depressed

Car is still running fine and no oil light on etc. Have refitted std exhaust so I can hear it better. Will try to upload to youtube as suggested.

Sounds like a bearing unfortunately, or possibly a shim has come adrift in the valve train.

yeh i have come to the conclusion that if its a bearing or valve train it has to come out.

time to get the spanners out!

Thanks for all who replied.
