Default Check engine light (10secs) - cause for concern?

G'day folks

Was on the freeway at 4pm and out of fucking nowhere the check engine light comes on for approx 10 seconds, then disappears. Wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, just driving straight at 100kph in 5th gear.

It started raining hardcore sideways into the driver's side about 2mins before the CEL appeared, anyone reckon something got wet under the hood? Checked all fluids and electrical plugs, nothing is leaking or loose or wet. All the ancillaries still work, and splash guards are intact inside all the wheel arches.

It's not the AFM as the car still runs fine, no performance degradation.

Is it safe to ignore this for a few days (back at work) if everything seems fine? I'd be interested to know what the CEL code was but don't have an ODB2 cable.

Car is an Aus MY00 WRX, stock engine/turbo, 258,000km. Major service done a month/2000km ago. Fed BP Ultimate 95% of the time.

Cheers, Lance

Don't need one. Just do the cable connect thing under the steering column and get the code from the CEL flashes. Full instructions on how to do so will be stickied on here somewhere I believe.

Same thing happened to me when i was driving into the city with hardcore rain. It also went off after a few seconds. Drove the gf back up to Hocking after and home... Ive done a quick check around and everything seems alright.

The error code will be still logged. I have an OBD II Bluetooth plug and software on my Macbook to check and clear. If you are up near Ellenbrook , more then happy to clear and check it all out for you. Otherwise I'll be at Rising Sunday if you wish to do it then.

i think i know what the cause was...
During the rain i turned on that rear light button thingy near the steering wheel.
once the engine light came on i turned it off and engine light disappeared aswell.

engine light didnt turn on straight away when i pressed it. Just when the rain started to pick up hardcore.

Cheers for the replies fellas.

@ westoz: good to know, I'll check it out tomorrow

@HaiiSon: yeah the only thing that happened at the same time was the heavy rain so hopefully that's the cause, a slight moisture problem!

@ Slap Dash: sorry mate, I'm in the complete opposite direction of Perth than you haha, and working all weekend so no Rising Sunday for me

You get used to a permanent CEL after a while.
