Exhaust too loud - silencer?
Well as most of you know, got defected for my 20's resulting in extra things needing attention, my last concern is my exhaust....
On the notice from the inspection guy he put "to comply", he said exhaust need to have two mufflers, I don't think this is true providing a cat converter is in place and the car isn't too loud. I have purchased a silencer for the cannon muffler to quieten things down a bit, will this suffice? The system consists of a 3" TBE, cat converter in usual place and a single cannon muffler at the end. It's not too loud but has a nice wrx rumble Any ideas? Info? |

Does anyone know the required DB levels and at what RPM they test them? I have a tester at home and wont quit until I fall below the level haha.

Fairly sure those silencers that slip in the tip of the cannon arent legal as they are a removable part. Therefore the pits wont allow it.
Just grab a stock exhaust and chuck it on for the day. |

When I had to get my car registered, because of the modifications, I had te car engineered, and they did a db on my exhaust, I have full 3.5" stainless steel exhaust, headers, hi flow cat and a cannon muffler, and I got 89.4db at 3000rpm, it had to fall below 90db so i just passed. Hope that helps

I should be alright then, it's safe to assume that he will do a DB test on it. His main concern was me not having a mid-muffler. As far as I'm aware a second muffler does nothing but reduce sound/flow etc. and isn't a legal requirement so long as the car passes the sound test. Fingers crossed lads.

A quick google search yields:
S204 under body picture: (Ok so not road reg in Aus, but an example of the stock exhaust system). Graphic of the intake/exhaust on a WRX: Moral of the story, the factory system comes with 1 muffler. It also comes with 1 resonator, which if you are being picky, is not a muffler. I'm guessing you don't have the resonator. ADR's you might want to read: Noise: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Series/F2005L03523 Emmisions: Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 79/00 - Emission Control for Light Vehicles) 2005 Also check 79/01 & 79/02 depending on the year of your car.

I passed the pits with one of the slip in silencers in an x-force mufler. Oddly they preferred that to a varex Idiot at the pits said "varex is illegal coz you might open it up"... yeah thats like defecting the car because I "might" get the speedo around to 260kph. They're supposed to pass/fail the car "as is". Not what you "might" do to it later. "Hey this drivers seat might get removed... you need to fix that" <rant off>
