not possible without spending a lot of money to make it work effectively.
motor is too higher compression, and nothing else around it will cope with the power.

If you're dead set then a half cut or a complete written-off donor car would be ideal, the N/A engines/gearboxes aren't built to handle a turbo from when I looked into it (too high compression, weak gearbox with ratios not suitable, etc). Just makes things a whole lot easier when you have all/most of the right compatible parts together rather than have to source bits from all over the place. Keep in mind the RX suspension and brakes should be upgraded too if you're looking at putting more power into the car.
As far as the selling suggestions go, you really just have to weigh up your situation. Last thing you'd want to do is sell the car only to end up with a knackered WRX that needs an engine swap anyway (mate of mine bought one that looked great for $15k only to have a big end bearing go a few weeks later). But if you do buy one, you'll have all the WRX equipment and the resale value to match, and insuring it would be a heap easier. EDIT: I'm in the same boat there, selling mine just isn't an option so I'll be looking down the conversion path. Poured way too much effort into my car just to flog it off & start over. |

I had a 2000 rx and wanted to do the exact thing. After some research and a few phone calls, I ended up chucking it on gumtree and started looking for a wrx.
Sold the rx for 11500, paid 12400 for the wrx. As much as I loved the car, it was definitely worth it in the end. Otherwise it's just time and money you'll never get back. Although the particular wrx I bought ended up costing me a ton in the end anyway....

I had a 98 RX Impreza and I plowed a shedload of money into and supercharged it. Great car, unique but I paid through the ass for it - back then STi half cuts cost a mint. Driveline, crank, block, brakes, gearbox, clutch, diffs etc etc. man, it adds up quickly. Then you have to take over the pits, convince your insurance company to insure it - it seemingly never ends.
As much as you love the current bus, the best route would be to sell it and buy a WRX. |

just think of how much more you will love the wrx in the long run..
