Default Power Steering Issues

Hey Guys and Girls,

Just wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with their power steering system? Mines just started playing up out of the blue, basically I started the car one morning after a few days of not driving it and went to drive it out of the garage and when I turned the steering wheel it felt very heavy and hard to turn and it also made a whining sound when I did turn it as if it was low on power steering fluid. We checked the fluid levels and they were fine so we took it for a drive and found it was really hard to turn into corners and would sometimes feel as if it locked up. When we got back we took the lid of the power steering fluid canister and the fluid inside was bubbling and looked very aerated. I called two mechanics to get their opinions, one said they thought my pump was gone or on the way out, and the other said it sounded like I had air in my lines and I could try taking the car for a really long drive and hope the air pocket would come out and it would improve, I did that but nothing improved. I took the car into the mechanics and they tried changing over the power steering hose to start with, then when that did nothing they said it must be the pump, the cheapest option was to get mine rebuilt so I did and was expecting to be able to pick the car up on Monday but got a call Monday morning saying it wasn’t fixed and was still doing the same thing, they have now said it must be the power steering rack. I took the car to get a 2nd opinion from a power steering specialist and after he had a quick look over it he said in his opinion it was the pump…I told him it had just been rebuilt but he said that’s just his opinion and that’s where he would start if we took the car to him. As you`d expect I am pretty confused now so I just wanted to find out if anyone else has had the same thing happen to their car, and if so what it ended up being ?

Thanks

I had something a bit similar but also had vibrations when i turned the wheel - had a look at the fluid and it was bubbly. I just went down to the autoshop and bought some new fluid for $10, syphoned out the old stuff from the top and added new stuff in and its been fine since But i suspect that you would have had new fluid in the rebuild...?

Have you spoken to STechnic?

I used to have a similiar issue after I had my power steering pump replaced, turns out it was just air bubbles in the fluid. Once that was bled out, it was all good.

Thanks for the replies They did put new fluid in Moose, so unfortunately I dont think its that, wish it was that simple though! Havent spoken to STechnic Sethi3, I got a private message with some advice on something to try so I am going to give that a go tonight and fingers crossed it`ll work but if not I will look into contacting STechnic as suggested.

You may have to change the o ring on the top connector, going into the pump.
