Not to add any more negativity but doing this with no prior experience and using all the best parts is just burning money. All for you giving it a go and good on you for doing it but I hope you have seriously deep pockets. Be keen to watch you progress, I hope you prove us all wrong.

Both the posts below hurt my head. How about open up a word doc and run spell/grammar check over it. That's not a request either.

Its not friggen rocket science it taks a bit to learn but can be done read and trial read and trial

the hard part is in the tune but then again we did people learn to tune guess what five of perts top tuners all taught them selfs with a little info

apparantly the 13bt is the most hardest engine to build to understand thats why no ones wont to touch them except for a minor few lol.

well guess what my first rotor i built went 10.60 ha ha ha and people said i coulnd not do it

my first turbo v8 went 640 rwhp and i was told i was stupid in attempting

so guess what im going to have a crack at a dislexic engine the boxer forged pistonies etc if i blow it up well boo hoo

how hard is it to get block machined get crank checked file some piston rings and away you go

seems like people are trying to make some thing sound harder than it could be,its his cash encourage him to do some thing cool

its looks way scarer to me pulling theses engines out rather than assemble a block and heads

i reckon you should give it a go and the main thing is measure it first and always crank it over by hand make sure nothing is touching where it's not mean to be other than that it will just run like a donkey but it won't blow up.
i;ve rebuild a few 4 bangers but never a boxer so it will be interesting to see how it goes and if you need some tools that you might only use once i might have it somewhere and you're always welcome to borrow it

Having been down this road with a Honda, I can only suggest spend money on professional services where it's needed, research and feel free to buy tools and DIY as you feel you are capable. Everyone has a different level of skill. Some specialist equipment wont be worth buying. Particularly where it comes to measurements, block prep and balancing. The assembly can be DIY, but you must know what you are doing.
The results once it all goes well, is very rewarding.

Sonic, you drive a '06 right? Planning on building a 2.5L? If so, I'd consider reading through rick's build thread and see where he is right now after spending probably 15k+ on his donk...

You'll spend less than a grand in gaskets and bearings, a little machining on top of that, and then swap it yourself into your car. If it works, you've then got yourself a fresh engine! If it doesn't, then you've not lost too much.

The problem with building an engine yourself is, if it fails, you could potentially wipe out engine parts with it.. And if you fork out for the best parts money can buy you'll have some expensive paperweights! Just as an example, I'm assuming you'll have a billet crank, and this could be damaged in a matter of seconds if you don't install and clearance the bearings correctly.
This.

Start with something that won't cost a bomb. If it turns out tight as a drum, then have a crack at a big dollar build.

What I think most people are overlooking is there is a massive difference between building and engine and assembling and engine.

Anyone can assemble an engine. Building one takes years of experience, trial and error to get to where they are now. The reason why you pay an engine builder more, is because of that experience. Same as any other profession.

I personally think the rebuild of a motor that has done a big end would be the best for learning.

I agree entirely with Kato in that there is a significant difference between the two. Also, to the people ranting that it's not something special and to go ahead and do it, how many of you have not built a motor before? I dare say, none. Also, what was the first you built? Probably something with less potential value. So with this in mind, do you remember how green you were? I know I was scratching my head wondering why I had a handful of nuts and bolts left over. I'm glad it was only an L18.
