Its safe to run any turbo so long as you have it appropriately tuned to match the rest of your parts.

Will run fine on the STi ECU.

More power can be had by going aftermarket ECU (i.e. PowerFC).

If worried, do a power run on a dyno and check the AFR's.

Similar question...

Can the VF48 be bolted on a stock WRX GC8 MY00 with stock factory ECU, and will it work, or will bad shit happen unless it's reflashed/tuned?

GC8's are more 'lenient' to mods like this rather than GD's etc.

I'd still want the STi computer as a minimum if swapping to a VF series turbo.

Correct, but why?

Thats like spending money to make your car run worse.....
Spend an extra $1500 on PowerFC, tune and fuel pump and reap the rewards.

If you don't have $1500, then you have to ask yourself. Why are you modifying your car in the first place?

Because some people may not want to go to that extent.

Ive been at both ends of the game - ran a motec, leant on it, gave me extra horsepowahs and brand wank factor.

Have run a larger than stock turbo on an sti ecu too - and guess what..
-cold start was perfect
-cruise was perfect
-made good peak power
-didnt rattle

downsides was it was a little laggier because the conversative tune in the factory ecu kept timing low early in the revs.

It cost me 100 bucks second hand, for 95% of the capability of what a 4k motec did....

And if you want to go down that road, why are you putting a power fc in if going aftermarket - its now old tech, spend the extra and get something modern and better?

how long is a piece of string.

A fuel pump is a must whether you go gold box or safc to be honest.

Just curious do you have a boost controller or just running off the pfc? Cheers
