Alternatively it could be as simple as a buggered exhaust hanger mount/bush, resulting in the exhaust hitting something on a hard gearshift.

Yeah I had that problem, my mate claimed diff rattle. It was just a hanger that let the zaust bump in every little hump

is there some sort of technique to hard changes.. like the not dumping clutch in launch, does this to a lesser degree follow thru to hard changes..

Do you mean what is the best way to do a hard gear change? Like at the drags for example?
