Default Metal on metal noise at 70kmh

Hi guys and gals,

I've got a 1995 wrx that has recently started making a noise that I haven't been able to track down
It's sort of sounds like metal on metal, I assumed a wheel bearing so I jacked her up and I couldn't find any play in any of the wheels. I checked all the ball joints and bushings while I was at it but nothing seemed to be of concern.

The noise starts at 65km/h is at its loudest at 70 and is gone by 80 and only present at really low throttle( just enough to stop speed from dropping, 5% or so), if I accelerate harder it's not present and same for when I take my foot off the accelerator. The gear I'm in doesn't change it at all.

Any suggestions of what to else check?

howdy.
AM no mechanic and hate noise from car that I cant pin point.
I had a noise that sounds like your description from the front wheels.
Which at slow speed was not there, hard accelerating not there and could make it stop but quick hit to the break... In my case it was the break pads that were too thin and the clips where touching the disc rotors. You can either check the pad or look at the rotor for wear marks. Had the pads changed and the noise is gone.
Hope you have a simple fix and that it works out as simple as mine.

I'd put my 2 cents on brake pads also.
Check fronts and rears.

Quote for wheel bearings, per side - Just from a few days ago.
Genuine bearings recommended, or better available, for cheaper?

Sounds a bit like a differential noise, the fact that it changes from coasting to accelerating

Finally had some free time, I drained the front and rear diffs and checked for any chunks of metal on the magnets, both were brilliant in that regard and refilled with Nulon 75w-90(GL-5) no noticeable difference(huge sigh of relief that it wasn't a diff).

Next up i'll check the brakes.

Tracked it down, turned out to be the rotor shield on the rear touching the rotor. Thank you all for your suggestions!
