If you are going full tard with harnesses etc and removing your airbags get a hans to go with the helmet. Even a low speed frontal crash with harnesses and no hans can damage your neck.
RUSSGT and amtrapid like this.

yes. I am getting a HANs. (looking at getting a HANS 3 device) It is the reason I am asking about helmets. Because I dont think my AS1698 spec helmet is suitable to have posts installed.

(I did look on the HANs website FAQ, and it states any competition approved helmet is suitable for HANS to be fitted, BUT I suspect they mean if its Snell/FIA approved for competition. Not like at RAC etc where the use of a AS1698 street motorcycle helmet is acceptable.)

So. Im looking to get a helmet to go with a HANs. But I think i will wait another month so I can either get one with the newest Snell certification due out next month. Or get one with the current 2010 spec, but at a discounted price because of the newer 2015 spec being released. ( a bit like new cars being discounted when the new model is released.)

My question was more aimed at which brands should i look for and which brands should i avoid. And pros / cons from people with first hand experience with a particular helmet.

I am looking for a low to mid range helmet. Maybe at about 500 bucks.

this is the email i got from snell

Dear Bram,

The SA2015 standard is release to the public on October 1, 2015. The manufacturers have been submitting helmets to this standard for the past couple of years. All manufacturers are given time to submit their helmets to us but no one is allowed to sell them to the public until October 1, 2015.

Best Regards,

Bonnie Adams

Bell carbon fibre open face is around that price. Ivan had them last time I was at Gogear.

Nice looking lid and even lighter than the Bell open face that I have, only thing with Bell is their helmets generally look pretty boring besides the CF model.

The quality of their entry level open face lid that I have seems very good in terms of straps, buckes, fitting, padding etc.

I would hold out a month and get the latest approved snell system.

yep. def gonna wait and see what happens after oct 1. Will be interesting to see if it coincides with a bunch of new models. Or if the existing models simply get the new certification.

I do like the idea of an open face. I get a bit clostrophobic in a full face. I would imagine a full face offer better fire resistance and protection from devris/impact. But also at the cost of more weight.

C/F would be a bonus too.

Go to Go Gear and see Ivan.
Take a look at the DTG Procomm helmets they have.

'Half wrap around jaw bit' is for comms. I.e if you plan on being in a rally as a driver or co-driver and want an open-face as opposed to full face, get that.

Also, different brands are all slightly different with their sizing/fitting, so be sure to try a few different brands. Different heads need different helmets.

open face VS full face - a few factors to look at:
* overall protection
* ease/difficulty of communication without comms
* other advantages/disadvantages/limitations (e.g you can't driver certain vehicles with an open-face).

thanks for that. Yeah i figured the half jaw bit was for something like a microphone. Looking about it seams its an option on some helmets, including the DTG Procomm 3.

Helmet sizing for me is always an issue. I have a big noggin. Plus i also have dreadlocks, which means its a pain to get decent fitment. Doing things like go kart hire etc and im always the one that has to ask if they have any 2XL helmets. ( you know what they say about guys with big heads? They wear big helmets.)
