So sorry to bring this old thread up..
But I was told by a very well known Subaru mechanic that
he uses Castrol edge 10w60 in his rex's,
He recomended it for alot of wrx's and also one's with higher k's
Any thoughts people ?
You have a '96 2L use a good quality 10w40.
I use 10w60 Castrol Edge in my ej257. Been that way for the last 50,000km or so this engine has been running. Its good stuff.
Are you running avcs??

Who is recommending 10w60??

Yeah true... 1996 2l turbo with higher k's..
sorry i dont wanna say who recomended the castrol edge 10w60
I dont wanna start any shenanighans, hope all can understand,
but thats maybe why they recomended a thicker oil for my car, coz of the high k's.

Also, this may sound stupid... what avcs ?

No AVCS. my98 heads.

No recommendation really. Just using what works. Its been good to me this whole time. 50,000km @ 340hp and just under 500Nm must be a good sign.
Doesnt burn any oil either over 5000km.

Correct me if I'm wrong but MMS use castrol 10W60 in most of the cars

I guess it really depends what works for you the best and seems like people are happy with 10W60. I've always used mobil 1 in all my cars and some always use castrol in their cars with no issues from either as long as the grade is suitable for the condition of the engine.

Always a good read out there to see what people have been using

MMS use edge 0w40.

Those links you posted show a majority of negative responses to using a 10w60 oil in a subaru.

Castrol recommend Edge Sport 5w30 or 0w40 & edge 5w30 or 0w40 for all ej's 1998-2012

Extreme use 10w60 (which isn't street use, where you'll never get it hot enough (~140C) to flow well) .

I'll stick with 5w50 Mobil 1 & my builder agrees.

Horses for courses, you can use Play doh in your sump for all I care.

Maybe take the time to read these posts from a Subaru enthusiast who is involved in the lubricant industry:

Hi, guys.
I'm buying a 2008 STI, and wanna do a oil change straight away. I used Mobil 1 5w30 in my WRX with no problems. That car has done 20000km with MRT XB kit. Should I use mobil one 0w40 or 5w30 EP or stick with normal 5w30? I do a bit performance street driving.

Thanks in advance.

Either 5-30 or 0-40 mobil1 would be sweet imo
