Using Mobil 1 fully syn 0w-40 just changed from castrol 0w-40 found didn't burn and ran alot smoother but when the car has done 20+ minutes of driving found a distinct ticking , does that mean I need a thicker oil ? Doesn't knock on cold start ...

Time to learn what 0w means I think...
Time to learn what 0w means I think...
0W is what I reply when someone thinks they know better than me.

But to actually answer the question, the W stands for winter and the number is the viscosity - the lower the number the more viscous it is at lower temps.

I thought a 0w oil was only used in very cold places where it snows? Does it snow in perth?
I understand that the 30 or 40 or 50 is the operating viscosity which is basically what your after

The 0W refers to the viscosity at cold start and doesn't imply use in snowing conditions.

For the record, I would only use the oil as specified in my owner's manual or by my engine builder.

Is Penrite 10W-50 full synthetic any good? I have been using this oil in my Impreza 2.0R EJ204 with AVCS which I occasionally take to the track. Will it protect my engine or are there better options for my NA?

Has anyone used PM Lubricants (http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/gsl-rallysport-sales/51353-australian-made-oil-holds-bathurst-lap-record.html)?
