Yes and it mentions a lot of very different opinions ranging from a special home made mix to she'll be right to following your owners manual.

Its also full of "I heard...."

Nevermind, I shall ring a few people and see what they think
Sorry guys....dredging this old thread up again..

2006 WRX 2.5, Completely stock standard.

I did an AHG tuning Arvo last month so I did an oil change as per the owners manual. 10W40 Castrol Edge is what I used.

Is this oil okay to use for something thats my daily driver and is going to be doing short track work once a month-ish?

Now I am going to book to do the tuning arvo thats on this month so I am assuming I do another oil change? By the time the trackday comes up it the car will be nudging the 5000KM point including the AHG day.
Use the oil as specified in the user manual. Any brand is fine so long as it is of the correct viscocity (10W40 or whatever it is).

There is no need to change oil from what is specified unless you have a very special built motor. Then you listen to your mechanic.

Let me know what you end up using mate as I'm in the same position.
I think a fully synthetic 10w40 is the way to go just not sure which one. Don't want Motul Turbolight, Motul 300v is too expensive, Mobil 1 don't make a full synthetic 10w40... not sure what to go with to be honest.

I use whatever I find on special at Supercheap in the right weight

MY99:
Use Mobil Delvac MX Extra 15w40 - Semi Synthetic or
Mobil Super 2000 X2 10W-40 (old name Mobil Synth S 10W-40) also Semi Synthetic.

Mobil Delvac MX 15w40 - is the full mineral oil.

And before you ask Delvac is marketed as a Diesel oil but it has API SL certification for use in Petrol cars as well.

If your engine has 100, 000KM+ go Mobil 1 Super Syn 15w50.
Castrol Edge Sport 10w60 is also another good one but will break down quicker.
Good cheap stuff also is Penrite Semi Synthetic HPR 10 (10w50).

These are all recommendations from my engine builder who knows EJ engines.

I drive an MY98 with 244km's on it and i've personally varied between several brands of oils.

Castrol, Motul and even Nulon.

All being 10w40 and fully synthetic.. Never had an issue or hiccup with any. :)

imo correct weight and viscocity is the key, not brand .

Thanks for that J, much appreciated! One of my concerns regarding Mobil Super 2000 x2 is that Mobil doesn't rate it as one of their high performance/top of the range engine oils - check out the back of the bottle below.

Or is this just a marketting gimic? I wish they'd make a fully synthetic 10W-40 so that we didn't have to stuff around.

BTW: I have an 06 WRX now (under 100kkm) so a 10w60 is a bit thick for everyday driving right? (especially with AVCS)

A bit off topic but what the hell is up with that text on the back of the bottle? You get absolutely no information out of it - it is the biggest piece of marketting propaganda that I've seen since those Ab-King ads on late night TV! "industry proven, endorsed, trust, superior, confidence" I mean wtf
