Usually 4l's is enough... roughly. Im not sure on which oil you should use, but you should be changing it 4 times a year at least, so if u dont see urself doing any track days in the next 4000-7000km's then use "ordinary" oil (suitable for a wrx) then when ur going to thrash it, do the oilchange first..

E4LUTION was 85/140 listed for your rear diff oil? i look at the listing for mine and i am pritty sure it was 80/90 unless its different for evo's.
Stace told me to stay away from the redline shockproof in my MY00 as its not good for syncro's. However it was good in my old 95 wrx. I think i may try some motul gearbox oil since i can't use redline. |

We have a valvoline book at work and it lists 80/90 for WRX. But they have LSD so I use LS90. I think Redline recommend 80w140 from memory.
I am using Valvoline Duragear 75w85 in my gearbox. So far so good. |

Just so every one is on the same page the new age Imprezas from 02 onwards have variable valve timing. These engines require a lighter oil than previously used to gain optimum performance.
A 10W-40 starts off cold thinner (10W) then as it warms thickens to a SAE40 rating. A 10W-60 has more friction modifiers to achieve the wider temp variation. Friction modifiers are some of the first parts in an oil to deteriorate...so a wide SAE range oil may need replacing more frequently. Mercedes use and recommend Mobil products. Listen to MSGOFAST on Rexnet, he has forotten more than most of us ever knew. Redline Shockproof has proven unsuitable over time for standard Subaru gearbox use, as confirmed by Redlines own technical support. Stay main stream brands, viscosity as recommended by Subaru or your Engine Builder. They know the tolerances. I use a Castrol 10W-60 because the GTP guys at the time racing Old School WRX's found the heavier oil prolonged engine life...big ends specifically. The MY99 is notorious for spinning them and my car is mainly used for spirited driving. I use a cheap Castrol non synthetic LSD oil in the rear diff, changed regularly it's the best bang for buck option. Tony Flood special Gearbox oil...he won't tell me what it is...great for synchros and proven in Rally...and still got some Castrol R 10W-60 in the engine. Before any of the usual dipshits want to add any smart arse comments...heres my reply: Fook off, I am off to bowls...

My recommendation would have been:
- Some engine oil other than Redline, purely for the cost factor (i.e. other oils half the price do the same job, such as Motul). - Redline lightweight shockproof gear oil - Genuine coolant Although lightweight shockproof "isn't suitable" for Subaru boxes, I alternate between Redline and Castrol in my box whenever I change it, and I'm sure to flush it out too (run cheap oil in the box for a few hundred km to get rid of the old stuff, then drop it out and put proper stuff in)...and I've NEVER had a problem. I got the Castrol in the box atm and Mobil 10W-30 synthetic in the engine. Works a treat Last edited by BALISTC; 09-05-2007 at 03:42 PM. |
