Oh, sorry for not being a pedantic prick. Maybe you should've made your earlier statement a little clearer.
Most people consider ball and roller bearing turbos in the same class, ie VF22, VF34. The other class being sleeve or plain bearing turbos, ie TD04 or VF30. If you really think a VF22 is capable of a genuine 450hp then you really read too much on the internet. An AVO400 or TD06-20G (genuine 400hp turbos) would shit all over a VF22, lets not even bring an AV0450 in to the equation. Last edited by JMAX; 27-09-2006 at 11:18 AM. |

I have seen with my own eyes a vf22 wrx making 440hp at the fly on a hub dyno And of course the avo400 are better. The AVO400 is a true ball bearing turbo... I never said that the vf22 is a good turbo. the vf22 is a very old design, it came out on the Jap 96 Sti. And roller bearing design is quite different to ball bearing. The ball bearing design has a far smaller contact area with the shaft and spools up significantly faster. Last edited by Mister Two; 27-09-2006 at 11:28 AM. |

So if this same car made 500hp on Nunzio's roller dyno in Osborne Park you would call a VF22 a 500hp turbo? Dynos are tuning tool, nothing more. Start quoting numbers from dynos and you'll quickly make a fool of yourself. I'll say it again, a VF22 is good for around 375hp at the flywheel, no more.

Also Dyno settings like Ramp rate and rolling time also effect readings (or so im told).

And while we're at it. The VF22 is a damn good turbo for the money. As a first step turbo upgrade they're nice jump in performance for a TD04 WRX. They can be a little laggy, but with some tuning, they can be made to perform very well.

Its all about application.. Vf22, Vf28, Vf35, vf34..
Need to have an idea on what the car will do instead of just doing the stop-gap solution. |

for the record, a vf 22/28/23/24/34 series are all ball bearing turbos, period.
a vf30/35 is a divided thrust bearing turbo a td04, td05 are oil classic oil journal bearing turbos.

Maybe this will make your mind up...
Ballsac did a 12.8(odd) running VF22/stock TMIC and a link I think? Bolt it on, as well as all of the associated mods, and there's no reason as to why you shouldn't run a 12. Roller/Ball/Thrust bearing...who cares. If it makes the numbers, drives well and does the times, who gives a shit.
