i have found thateven some of the midrange stuff will bend eventually, with heavy use. work out how often you are going to be using them....I have probably close to $6000 if not more worth of tools! but they do get used everyday, i hate using cheap crap that isnt always the size it says it is

Think I'll go with a cheapie set, that way i can get everything i need straight up without spending too much, then when i do break something i can replace single items with more expensive stuff.

Whats the best way to go with boxes? want something thats well organised, but it wont ever really get moved around too much or beaten around in the back of a ute so doesn't 'need' to be that strong.

the whole KC Tools etc are quite good, i believe they are made byt the same companies as King Chrome and Sidchrome etc but are the lower class brand .. but they work fine

Definates:
set of offset ring spanners
set of combination open and ring spanners (never use them, use the ring spanners but you will occasionaly need 2 of the same size)
socket set with ratchet
small medium and large extensions for ratchet
some form of breaker bar (12")
a set of ratchet spanners .. best invention in the world
also pick up an extra 10, 12, 14 and 17mm socket for your kit, for the times you need to remove a 14mm bolt with a 14mm head etc

Extas:
a 32mm socket.. if you ever need to remove drive shafts
10mm pipe or flared or C spanner (whatever you want to call it) for brakelines
Allen key set

that should get you a good starter kit for working on subarus

+1 for KC ratchets, i have a 1/4 drive ratchet i have used everyday for the past 4 years and it is still the same as it was when it was new. Although missing paint.
Get a really strong 1.4 drive set. Mine is a mixture of sidchrome, snap-on and KC. I have sockets that go up to 15mm (not that big i know but most bolts arent that big) and can get through weeks of work without using any other size socket set. The best part is they are thinner and can get in smaller spaces. and are much nicer to use IMHO

I got a lot of mates who have the KC kits, they are excellent.

I have mainly Repco stuff, as said up there, lifetime warranty, break something walk in, across the counter swap. My 1/4 inch ratchet has found our concrete retaining wall a million times at a fast pace, and still going good.. I found buying a 1/4 inch set in something 1/2 decent, and buying spanners from 7-19 in something 1/2 decent is good.

I have also a few cheap sets of spanners for when we need doubles or working on other shit. Also i have a habit of when i go to bunnings i always buy 3-4 more philips screwdrivers ( the 1 dollar ones ), always find those bastards go missing.

At work we use repco/sidchrome, but for our 3/4 inch drives and high impacts we use whatever the Rema TipTop bloke gives us, and we go through 1 1/4 inch impact sockets in 3/4 drive every 2 months, crack on the sidewalls while using a 480nm torque wrench.

In saying that, I love the cheap ass tools that you can buy these days. For once off's or jobs for a price that replacing the tool 20 times is still cheaper than buying the brand name set, I love em.
ROFL yeh no shit !! i needed to grind some seized bolts off my patio when demolishing the old one - bunnings Ozito $19.99 angle grinder FTW !!!

I've used it to cut and grind everything from logs, tiles, steel, concrete, bricks, limestone and it just wont farken die hahaha!!!!!!!!!!

Cheap ass spanners are still better than using a shifter, but don't go too cheap.
I snapped the jaw off a 1/2" Bunnings spec combination spanner just with my thumb!
It's still in use though - cut it down into a handy manifold spanner.
