Getting Into Motorsport
Hi all,
I am looking at getting into motorsport this year and im not sure how i should go about it. I have never done any circuit racing before and I dont have a CAMS licence yet. First i would like to get my CAMS liscence which will allow me to compete in circuit events at Barbagallo raceway and WA tarmac rallys. What do i do to obtain the required licence? I would also like to get some experience at the track before i do anything competitive. Can i just go down to Bargs on the weekend and pay for a few laps? My car will be track ready in the next month or two and once i think i am ready for competition then i want to compete in circuit events and tarmac rallys. What competitive events can i get into and how do i go about entering them? Sorry for all the questions but i am a bit clueless on the topic. If you have any experience on the topic then can you please post your comments. Answers to the questions would be good as well Thanks Last edited by BlacklistedWRX; 14-01-2009 at 03:51 PM. |

Oh and the track car is a 450+rwhp Ford AU3 XR8 with almost everything ready for circuit racing.

What kind of rallies are you wanting to enter? Dutton? If so you will only need a L2S licence, which is simply joining a CAMS affiliated club and paying some money.
As for learning to track the car, I would try the following in this order: 1. AHG skid pan day. 2. AHG double skid pan day. 3. AHG long track (with instructor and then just do the tuning arvos) 4. No limits nights at Barbagello. Then its all seat time and entering as much as possible. There are a lot of little events around (Autotest, Sprint Series, Evo vs WRX days) which will give you a timed event.

Sounds good. I will fill out the forms and head down to the March track day. Should be good fun and a good learning experience.
How many laps do you normally do a night? |

Depends on your car and how many people attend. Most laps I have done in a night is 30+odd. The least is 7. You will get 4 runs at the very least. Don't worry if you're running late either they are never on time.
haha sorry guys

Any cams club will let you be eligible for L2S. I.e. No Limits, WRX Owners Club, AFARCC etc etc. I think they are listed on the cams site somewhere?
http://www.dtec.com.au/index.htm for all the MC Motorsport stuff.

If your new to circut work, ring the WA sporting car club, www.wascc.com.au and ask about booking in for the competition driving school they run once a year, basically a bunch of the guys who regurally run at the circut teach people how to get around it and the best way to do it..

No Limits is great too, as long as you don't try and get ahead of yourself.
