Sorry that story is a hoax. People should google these things before sending on.

This story sound familiar?

Still probably good advice if you are in a deserted area though.

True, when you signup for a mobile, they really should include something about it in the paperwork. It could be very useful information one day.

Wow, I thought most people knew this...

As mentioned by otheres... If your phone is locked, the usual emergency numbers are programmed in to work for emergency use ie. 112, 000, 911 depending on the brand of phone. The idea being if there is an accident 'anyone' can pick up the phone and dial without having to know how to unlock the phone, your sim pin etc etc.

I believe 112 also gives more information to the operator of your location, so if you don't specify you are in WA and there are a few towns with the same name throughout the country, they can track that you are there. But I don't know if dialling 000 does that too...

112 on the Iphone sends gps location data. Not sure if it works in Aus though.

I don't think this was mentioned but 112 uses the strongest signal regardless of your own carrier.

In other words here in Aus if you are in a rural area it will probably use Telstra even if your phone is locked to optus/vodafone/virgin etc.

000 only uses your carrier so is therefore less reliable.

Not so. If you are in the sticks and can only pick up a signal from another carrier, your phone will display "Emergency calls only" and you can still make 000 calls.

It is not satelite, and neither 000 nor 112 will work if there is no coverage at all.
