Default 112 Police Dispatch number???

Just received this email from a mate, I never knew this!!!!

Quote:
UNMARKED POLICE CAR WARNING.
This number actually exists here in Australia . Read this and then send
it to all your friends! I never even knew about being able to dial the
number 112 feature! This actually happened to someone's daughter.
Lauren was 19 yrs old and in university. This story takes place over
the Christmas/New Year's holiday break.
It was the Saturday before New Year's and it was about 1pm in the
afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police
car pulled up behind her and put his lights on.
Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and university age) and
have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the
side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a petrol station,
etc. So Lauren had actually listened to her parents' advice, and
promptly phoned the number 112 on her mobile phone to tell the police
dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to
tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a
flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to
see if there was a police car where she was, and there wasn't, and he
told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already
on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind
her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car
behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.
The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a
car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police
have to respect your right to keep going to a 'safe' place. You
obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them I.e., put
on your hazard lights, or call No. 112 like Lauren did. Too bad the
mobile phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful
information.
112 IS THE NUMBER TO RING IF YOU CANNOT GET SERVICE ON YOUR MOBILE
IT'S LIKE 000
So now it's your turn to let your friends know about No. 112
This is good information that I did not know!!!!
Please pass on to any females that you know.
Go to the Website now. It is real and very informative for all the
family, then forward on to friends & family.

112 is the international emergency number on ALL mobile phones.
always works even if there is no SIM. Even if its asking for a PIN,
dial 112 and get emergency services. It is part of the GSM standards.

All mobile carriers are forced to honour it. They just dont bother
to tell anyone about it.

Very handy if there is an accident... pick up anyones mobile and
hit 112 then send (green button)

Feel free NOT to test it... you will get a fine for being a dickhead if
there is no emergency.

Here is an odd test... I took the SIM out of my phone and it
says "INSERT SIM". If you press any button it dones nothing...
BUT... press 112, and it shows on the display... just don't press
SEND.

Even if the handset is locked... press 112... just DONT press SEND.

Yep. Same rules apply as in dialing 000, wouldnt want to dial it to be funny or expect a nice fine.

Heard many variations of that story, its BS (IMO), but oh well, it is the internet

000 is an aussie thing. The GSM (and other standards) are generally
done be IEEE or ISO. This being the case, 112 is enforced when
manufactures make mobiles. So forget 000 on the mobile, use 112.

also as ian mentioned its an international standard, so no matter which country you are in, dial 112 from a mobile and you will get that countries emergency services.

In regard to the story, not the 112 thing although it's true.

Last year I had an incident on Hepburn ave in hillaries that was a little scary.

I was driving my old 98 wrx. I turned left off Marmion ave on to Hepburn, heading towards the Marina. I gave it a 'little' as I cornered onto hepburn, nothing major just a squirt in 2nd.

about 30 seconds later a car came belting up my ass, yep blue and reds on the dash (D style) flashing but no siren.

I slowed to pull over, but noticed it was a silver VT wagon. Hmm.....Mr PLOD has No VT's anymore...... So I figure something suss was going to happen (carjack?) and booted it into the back streets, the commie followed but I lost it after a couple of turns.

I rang the real cops on my mobile from the BP in Padbury and reported it as an attempted carjack.

Just as I hung up the VT pulled into the servo, the lightbox still on the dash. there were 4 youngish guys in it. I called the cops again, gave them the rego and a patrol car turned up within a couple of minutes (I stayed inside the servo).

I gave a statement on the spot and was informed that they had been doing this for a couple of weeks, I was the third that night and apparently they were getting bolder each time. the driver was eventually charged with impersonating a public officer.

I now drive with the doors locked just in case.
