sorry to 'hijack' your thread Timbo...
but in a related topic: If i am 'ripping' my DVD's to the PC, for backup, what program should i use to join the VOB files, or convert the VOB files to something my computer can play easily. I eventually want to get my entire DVD collection on the PC, so i can get rid of the disks, and have a Media drive in my home theatre. PS: I am using DVD Shrink to 'backup' the DVD's. |

VLC player can play back VOB files. VOB files do not need to be joined to playback with no stops. inside the VIDEO_TS folder will be a few large files and some small files for the menu system and audio.
VLC will allow you to play back the Folder and it will play the movie form start to finish with no gaps. |

i see, so technically, there is no advantage to using a program to convert to AVI? what about size's? coz i know a DVD is usually around 4gb... is that normal?

Yep 4gb plus depending on DVD.
avi is around the 700-800MB depending on quality

a standard dvd is ~4.7gb but when converted to an avi/xvid/ac3 it can become ~700mb due to the compression and other factors. if you convert a dvd to vob files, then it will be ~4.7gb.
