I have my ps3 connected via hdmi to my samsung 50" plasma. Cable goes in, image and sound comes out.

Unsure what you are doing to make menus not appear, but games appear.

Try other hdmi ports on your tv, reset your tv settings and try again.

ok so,
the ps from the bedroom works fine in the lounge.
so it must be something to do with the ps from the lounge..... but the ps from the lounge works fine on the china spec screen in the bedroom.

when we got the ps from the lounge on the bed screen, we confirmed it was set to HDMI and we did an update. put in back in the lounge and.... f/a, not displaying vid, sound works fine

You should be able to set the PS3 to 1080i via the menu..... as they do the following resolutions: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p

Post up the samsungs model please and I'll find the native resolution for it.

Does anything else hdmi work on the tv?

Don't bother with the optical audio, just have one issue at a time.

PS3 --> HDMI Cable --> TV

If no image, try something else

Other Device --> HDMI Cable --> TV

If that works, try the PS3 in another TV using the same cables etc. If that works then your TV settings are wrong.

Samsung 42" wide screen plasma - PS42C91HD

Native Resolution: 1024×768 pixels

Your Samsung won't process 1080P at all from an xbox (black screen), 1080i drops out at random apparently on xbox too.

Set the PS3 for 720p resolution as anything else is scaled up or down and that maybe your issue.

Here's how to change the resolution on your PS3 : CLICKY!

ok,
so put the ps from the lounge back on the 'china spec' screen from bed. and again it works fine.
i've confirmed the settings,
its set to hdmi and set to 'auto' screen rez 1080p at 25htz.
i mucked around with the settings a bit, not to many other options. so the auto should pick up the right rez. if if you try to manually change it, the china spec wont pick it up. so you have to go back to auto. which should work fine anyway, but doesnt

not an easy one. thats for sure. what else could it be?

"its set to hdmi and set to 'auto' screen rez 1080p at 25htz"

^^ There's the problem mate your samsung won't display 1080P! especailly @ 24/25 hz

change it to 720P first and try that.

If that works then try for 1080i not P

1080P 24/25 is for full hi def displays with a native 1920 x 1080 resolution that can handle 24/25 hertz refresh rates.

Is the Celestial newer than the Samsung by any chance?

(I'm not dissing the Celestial, I had a 120 cm Celestial rear projector in my first home theatre set up and loved it!)
